Key Points

• In the Indian Ocean region, the number of emergency room visits for asthma among children under 15 years of age decreased significantly (fourth week of school in Réunion) compared to week 37 (60 vs. 97 visits in week 36). The proportion of cases (6.1%) is also decreasing and remains comparable to that observed in the previous two years.

• Nationally, during the second week of the school year, asthma-related visits among children under 15 increased sharply compared to week 36, both in emergency departments (+126%, or +2,828 visits) and at SOS Médecins clinics (+111%, or +471 procedures).

• The share of activity in emergency departments (6.7% of all visits) and within the SOS Médecins network (3.3% of all procedures) is also on the rise and significantly exceeds that of previous years.

• The proportion of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit for asthma decreased compared to the previous week, falling from 36% in Week 36 to 34% in Week 37.
