Asthma Health Monitoring - Back-to-School 2021. Weekly Update, September 21, 2021.

Key Points

Week 37 (September 13–19, 2021):

  • In the Indian Ocean region, five weeks after the start of the school year in Réunion, the number of emergency department visits for asthma among children under 15, as well as their share of total activity, has stabilized (37 visits and 3.5% in Week 37 vs. 39 visits and 3.7% in Week 36). The observed level is lower than that of the previous three years (2017, 2018, and 2019) during the same period. The proportion of hospitalizations following emergency department visits has decreased to 16%.

  • Nationally, at the end of the second week of school in mainland France, the increase in emergency department visits for asthma among children under 15 continued in Week 37 but at a more moderate rate than in Week 36 (+59%, or +1,136 visits). The same trend is observed in the SOS Médecins network (+47%, or +181 visits) (Table 2). The increases observed so far remain comparable to those of the past three years.
