Comparison of stroke incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates among men and women aged 35 and older: the Lille Stroke Registry
Introduction: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of age and sex on the rates of stroke onset, incidence, and 28-day mortality among the population of Lille aged 35 and older. Methodology: Data collected between 2008 and 2015 were obtained from the Lille Stroke Registry (cerebral infarctions and spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages). Results: A total of 2,426 strokes (including 1,917 new cases) were recorded (81.5% ischemic, 15.6% hemorrhagic, and 2.9% undetermined). After adjusting for age, attack and incidence rates were approximately 30% lower in women than in men, regardless of etiology; mortality rates from cerebral infarction did not differ between men and women. Mortality rates from spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages were approximately 35% lower in women. The total number of strokes, both incident and fatal, was higher in women than in men. These figures varied by age: they were higher in men under 75 and in women over 75. Women were on average 7 years older than men. The prevalence of a history of migraine and atrial fibrillation was higher among women. Conversely, the prevalence of a history of smoking, head trauma, coronary artery disease, and lower extremity arteritis was higher among men. Conclusion: The risk of stroke was higher in men than in women before age 75, and similar after age 75. However, given the increased risk with age and the age distribution of the population, the absolute number of strokes in the population was overall higher among women.
