West Nile Virus in Metropolitan France. 2024 Report.

  • In 2024, 38 locally acquired human cases of West Nile virus infection were identified in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Occitanie, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine: the departments of Var (n=24 cases), Hérault (n=9), Gard (n=3), Gironde (n=1), and Pyrénées-Atlantiques (n=1).

  • The West Nile virus has thus confirmed its spread in Europe and France, with human and/or equine cases detected every year since 2022 along the Atlantic coast in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In 2024, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department (Basque Country) was affected for the first time.
