Publication of the first public health bulletins on tobacco for each region of France

In 2017, according to data from the Santé publique France Barometer, the number of daily smokers had fallen by one million in just one year. This historic decline comes amid a strong push to combat smoking, with the implementation of major measures under the National Plan to Reduce Smoking (PNRT) in 2016 and a prevention strategy that is increasingly tailored to smokers: the launch of Tobacco-Free Month, the creation of the new Tabac info service app...

Furthermore, data from the 2017 Health Barometer highlight significant regional disparities: Île-de-France and Pays-de-Loire were the regions with the lowest smoking rates in 2017, with prevalence rates of 21.3% and 23%, respectively. Conversely, smoking prevalence is higher in four regions than in the rest of mainland France: Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (32.1%), Hauts-de-France (30.5%), Occitanie (30.3%), and Grand Est (30.1%).

Today, Santé publique France is publishing public health bulletins dedicated to tobacco for each region of France, with the exception of Corsica, available for download below.

For the first time, these public health bulletins provide a detailed and up-to-date overview, using the most recent available data on smoking habits and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality in French regions, down to the departmental level where possible.

The data presented are derived from surveillance systems implemented by Santé publique France, the OFDT, and Inserm; and for cancer, its partners INCa, Francim, and the Hospices Civils de Lyon.
