Nouvelle-Aquitaine Public Health Bulletin. January 2019.
Key Points
In 2017, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region had 1.1 million daily smokers aged 18 to 75, with a standardized prevalence of daily smokers of 28.1%.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region did not differ from other metropolitan regions in terms of the prevalence of daily smoking, the proportion of heavy daily smokers (> 10 cigarettes/day), or the proportion of smokers with high tobacco dependence; however, it had higher-than-national-average prevalence rates for daily smoking among 17-year-olds and for smoking among pregnant women before pregnancy and during the third trimester.
Just over one in two daily smokers (54.6%) wanted to quit smoking, and one in four (27%) had made an attempt to quit for at least one week during the past year.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region had incidence and mortality rates in line with the national average for the conditions most closely associated with smoking (lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and ischemic heart disease), with significant disparities between departments: Creuse and Landes presented the most concerning situations.
