Key Points

In 2017, the Pays de la Loire region had 600,000 daily smokers aged 18 to 75, representing 23.2% of the population—a prevalence of daily smoking lower than the national average (26.9%).

Daily smoking was more common among young men and people with low incomes. One in four 17-year-olds in the Pays de la Loire region is a daily smoker, a figure close to the national average.

The prevalence of daily smoking decreased in the Pays de la Loire region between 2016 and 2017, among both men and women.

In 2016, the prevalence of tobacco use during the third trimester of pregnancy (22.3%) was higher than the national average.

Among daily smokers in 2017, 59.8% wanted to quit smoking, and 27.4% had made an attempt to quit for at least one week during the past year.

The Pays de la Loire region had a significantly lower incidence and mortality rate for lung cancer than the national average, for both men and women.
