The 2024 Public Health Conference Designated a "National Cause"

In this historic year for sports in France, with Paris hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games from July 28 to September 8, and following the President of the Republic’s initiative to designate the promotion of physical activity and sports as the 2024 National Cause, Santé publique France has chosen to align itself with this initiative and is organizing the 2024 edition of the Santé publique France Public Health Conference, focused on promoting physical and sports activity and reducing sedentary lifestyles. As a result, the agency has been awarded the 2024 National Cause designation.

On the agenda for these two days:

  • A plenary session on the theme “Experimentation and Behavior Change,” which will feature a presentation by the OECD on effective policies to increase physical activity.

  • A focus on: How can we adapt our sports practices and physical activity in the context of climate change?

  • A session on “Sports as a setting for implementing health promotion initiatives.”

  • A session: “From Theory to Practice: Behavioral Sciences in the Service of Public Health,” which will feature a presentation on sports participation among adolescents.

Session: “Public Health Challenges at Major Events: What Does the Future Hold for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games?”

In preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the entire country is mobilizing, and public health is no exception. This session will feature international public health experts discussing the preparation and execution of the London and Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will also bring together various French stakeholders involved in the preparation of the Games. Through a series of presentations followed by a roundtable discussion, this session will seek to understand the need for special mobilization, both leading up to and during the event, and to collectively address the public health challenges facing us during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A plenary session on the need to consider environmental protection and public health together

The study of the intrinsic links between plant, animal, human, and ecosystem health has led to the development of a transdisciplinary and systemic approach defined by the concept of “One Health.” The emergence of new epidemics and zoonotic diseases has often been at the center of this approach.

Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly clear that the environmental factors underlying health issues are numerous and complex, and that the prevention of chronic diseases must also take into account these complex interactions between the various components of our environment. The objective of this session is to demonstrate the value of considering environmental protection and public health together. In particular, it will aim to illustrate the importance of protecting and restoring the quality of ecosystems and biodiversity in a context where there is an urgent need to implement adaptation and mitigation policies to combat climate change. The session will focus on describing the co-benefits for the environment and human health of nature-based adaptation and mitigation solutions.

Discussion sessions on topics related to our strategic priorities

Over the course of these two days, sessions will be held on various topics reflecting the agency’s strategic priorities and its six major public health challenges.
