This article presents an updated overview for 2016 of HIV testing activity in France in medical testing laboratories (LaboVIH database), rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), and self-tests. In 2016, 5.4 million [95% CI: 5.34–5.52] HIV serology tests were performed, a number that has been increasing since 2014 (+3%, p=0.001). Of these, approximately 300,000 (6%) were conducted anonymously and free of charge. The number of HIV serology tests confirmed as positive was 10,667 [9,926–11,407], a figure that has remained stable since 2007. The proportion of positive serology tests was higher among anonymous tests (3.6 per 1,000 tests) than among non-anonymous tests (1.9 per 1,000). Approximately 56,300 rapid HIV tests were conducted in 2016 by 52 community-based or prevention organizations selected for the national community screening program established five years ago in France; 491 of these were positive, representing 8.7 per 1,000 tests. In 2016, 74,651 HIV self-tests were sold in pharmacies. HIV testing activity in France has increased slightly over the past two years, without an increase in the number of positive serology results. Existing screening programs complement one another to help achieve the goal of reducing the number of infected individuals who have not yet been diagnosed.
