Key Points
Recent Syphilis
In 2018, 1.8 million syphilis tests were performed in the private sector (the first decrease since 2006) and 220,405 at CeGIDD (an 11% increase from 2016 to 2018).
The number of recent syphilis diagnoses (< 1 year) reported in the RésIST network has remained stable since 2016 and primarily involves men who have sex with men (MSM) (79%).
In 2018, another 6 cases of congenital syphilis were reported (between 1 and 7 cases per year in previous years).
Gonococcal Infections
In 2018, 1.6 million gonorrhea tests were performed in the private sector and 305,535 in CeGIDD, representing increases of 18% and 75% compared to 2016, respectively.
The number of gonococcal infection diagnoses reported by the RésIST network increased by 53% between 2016 and 2018. This increase was observed among MSM (+58%) and among heterosexuals (+29%).
The majority of individuals diagnosed with gonorrhea within the network in 2018 were MSM (71%).
Two strains of gonococcus resistant to ceftriaxone (the standard treatment for gonorrhea) were isolated in France, one in 2017 and the other in 2019 (the last year such a strain was isolated was 2010).
Chlamydia trachomatis Infections
In 2018, 2.1 million Ct infection screenings were performed in the private sector and 332,004 in CeGIDD, representing increases of 9% and 37% compared to 2016, respectively.
In 2018, the number of Ct infection diagnoses in the private sector was 110,645, and 22,325 in CeGIDD. The number of diagnoses increased in CeGIDD between 2016 and 2018 (+15%).
722 cases of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) were reported to the National Reference Center for Bacterial STIs in 2018, almost exclusively among MSM (98%).
