Outbreak of invasive meningococcal B:14:P1.7, 16 infections in Aquitaine, 2012–2013
Introduction and Objectives: Among invasive meningococcal infections (IMI), serogroup B is the predominant cause in France, and certain clones can lead to prolonged outbreaks. An epidemic of IIM B:14:P1.7,16 was detected in 2012 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (PA) region and led to the implementation of a vaccination campaign using the MenBvac® vaccine. Materials and Methods: Surveillance of IIM relies on mandatory reporting and strain characterization by the National Reference Center (CNR). Monitoring of vaccination uptake in the population was based on the analysis of a database of individuals residing, working, or studying in the area, updated for each person who began their vaccination series. Results: Between July and September 2012, four cases of IIM B:14:P1.7,16 (one death) were reported around Lagor (PA), with an incidence in this area of 14 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Two new cases were reported in April 2013 in the same area. Lessons learned from the experience in Seine-Maritime led the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) to recommend vaccination of contacts followed by vaccination of individuals aged 2 months to 24 years with MenBvac in July 2013. By the end of 2013, vaccination coverage across all age groups was 18.9% for the first dose in the general population. All contacts of the cases were vaccinated. Conclusion: The detection of this outbreak enabled the rapid implementation of a vaccination campaign among the affected population. No new cases of IIM B:14:P1.7,16 have been reported since April 2013 following vaccinations administered to all contacts of confirmed cases and subsequently to the general population, despite currently low uptake. The temporal and spatial clusters of IIM B were taken into account by the HCSP in the recommendations for use of the new Bexsero® vaccine. (R.A.)
