Regional Pneumococcal Surveillance Networks: Monitoring of Antibiotic Resistance and Serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae Isolated in France in 2005
In 2005, the 22 Regional Pneumococcal Surveillance Centers (ORP) collected 6,398 pneumococcal strains from 6,398 specimens taken from 6,156 patients, of whom 4,303 (69.9%) were adults (A) and 1,853 (30.1%) were children (C). The 6,398 specimens were distributed as follows: 399 CSF samples (A: 288 and C: 111), 4,048 blood cultures (A: 3,562 and C: 486), 1,315 ear pus samples (C: 1,212), and 636 respiratory specimens (A: 521). The percentage of strains classified as intermediate or resistant to penicillin was 44.6% (A: 40.4% and C: 54.3%), 22.4% for amoxicillin (A: 22.4% and E: 28.9%), and 14.6% for cefotaxime (A: 13.1% and E: 17.9%). In CSF, the number of strains with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) greater than 0.25 mg/L was 188 for amoxicillin and 91 for cefotaxime. In the CSF, 42.8% of the serotypes isolated from children are present in the 7-valent vaccine, and 76.4% of the serotypes isolated from adults are present in the 23-valent vaccine. (R.A.)
