COVID-19: Epidemiological Update as of March 31, 2022

Key Points

In Week 12, SARS-CoV-2 transmission intensified across the country, with an increase in new
hospitalizations.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates rising across all age groups for the third consecutive week

    • Incidence rates >1,000/100,000 in all regions

    • Positivity rate remains very high and is rising

    • Admissions to critical care slightly up

  • Overseas territories:

    • High and rising incidence rate in Réunion (>1,000)

    • High incidence rate but decreasing in Martinique (>1,000)

  • Reinfections: 5.4% of all confirmed cases in week 11

Variants

  • Omicron accounted for more than 99.9% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S11 survey of March 14

  • BA.2 sublineage predominant (84% in S11)

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of March 28, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • 79.5% of the total population had received a full primary vaccination series

    • 73.2% of those aged 18 and older and 83.2% of those aged 65 and older had received a booster dose

    • Need for a complete vaccination regimen including the booster, with a second dose for eligible individuals, particularly those aged 80 and older, nursing home residents, and immunocompromised individuals

  • Against the backdrop of a sharp increase in the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses:

    • Importance of individuals continuing to follow preventive measures, including wearing a mask—particularly in enclosed spaces or in the presence of vulnerable people—handwashing, and frequent ventilation of enclosed spaces
