Estimates of the number of acute hepatitis B diagnoses and the completeness of mandatory reporting in France in 2016: the 2016 LaboHEP survey

Objectives - To estimate the number of acute hepatitis B diagnoses and the completeness of mandatory reporting of acute hepatitis B (MR) in France in 2016. Compare the 2016 estimates with those from 2013. Materials and Methods - The LaboHep survey was conducted among a random sample of 2,008 private and public clinical laboratories to collect data on the number of positive tests for anti-HBc immunoglobulin M (IgM) and the clinical context. The number of acute hepatitis B diagnoses was estimated using the sampling plan after handling missing data through multiple imputation. The completeness of the DO was calculated by comparing the number of anti-HBc IgM-positive cases reported by laboratory professionals as part of the DO in 2016 to the number of cases estimated from the 2016 LaboHep survey. Results - The number of acute hepatitis B diagnoses in 2016 is estimated at 257 (95% confidence interval, 95% CI: [225–290]), corresponding to a rate of 0.39 [0.34–0.44] per 100,000 inhabitants, which is not significantly different from the rate estimated in 2013 (0.44/100,000 [0.39–0.50]). The completeness of the acute hepatitis B surveillance system in 2016 is estimated at 27.0% [25.8–28.1], significantly different from that of 2013 (23.5% [22.3–24.7]). Discussion - Conclusion - In 2016, the estimated number of acute hepatitis B diagnoses remained low. The completeness of acute hepatitis B case reporting remains insufficient.
