Influenza Surveillance in Metropolitan France. 2014–2015 Season

This article provides an overview of influenza activity in mainland France during the 2014–2015 season. Methods: This review is based on a descriptive analysis of influenza surveillance data provided by outpatient medical networks, virological analyses from partner laboratories, reports of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in elderly care facilities, surveillance of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for influenza, surveillance of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care units, and available mortality data. Results: The influenza epidemic began in the community in mid-January, peaked in week 06/2015, and ended in mid-March, for a total of 9 weeks of epidemic activity. The intensity was high. A majority of influenza viruses of subtype A(H3N2) circulated, some of which differed from the vaccine strains. The impact of influenza was particularly severe among the elderly, with an increase in the number of emergency department visits (n=30,911) and hospitalizations (n=3,361), the number of intensive care unit admissions (n=1,597) due to influenza, and episodes of acute respiratory infection in elderly care facilities (n=1,328). Excess mortality from all causes was higher than that observed since 2006–2007, primarily among individuals aged 65 and older. Conclusion: The 2014–2015 influenza epidemic, which was of high intensity, was characterized by a particularly severe impact on older adults, linked to the A(H3N2) virus but also to low vaccination coverage and the circulation of viruses partially covered by the vaccine. It serves as a reminder of the severity of the disease and the importance of improving influenza vaccination coverage among at-risk individuals starting next season.
