Epidemiological and virological surveillance of influenza in France, 2010–2011 season.
This article presents an epidemiological and virological review of influenza activity in France during the 2010–2011 season, which followed the 2009–2010 pandemic. Methods - This report is based on a descriptive analysis of community-based influenza surveillance data provided by primary care networks, virological analyses from partner laboratories, reports of outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in long-term care facilities, surveillance of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for clinical influenza, surveillance of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care units, and analysis of mortality data available in metropolitan France and the overseas departments. Results - In mainland France, the 2010–2011 season was characterized in the community by a moderate influenza epidemic, occurring between late December 2010 and mid-February 2011, and of lesser magnitude than the 2009–2010 pandemic. Virological surveillance showed the circulation of type A influenza viruses, the majority of which were A(H1N1)pdm09, followed by the slightly later circulation of type B viruses. An increase in the number of outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in long-term care facilities for the elderly was observed compared to previous seasons. Hospitalization rates were lower than in 2009–2010. Severe cases admitted to intensive care units exhibited epidemiological characteristics and a case fatality rate comparable to those observed during the 2009–2010 pandemic. No excess all-cause mortality was detected compared to what is typically observed during influenza seasons. In Réunion, the moderate-intensity influenza epidemic was linked to the predominant circulation of the A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, associated with the occurrence of severe cases, whereas in the Antilles-Guyana region, moderate-intensity epidemics were linked to the predominant circulation of the A(H3) virus.
