Introduction – Occupational exposure to plant protection products (PPPs) can have adverse health effects (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, hematologic malignancies, prostate cancer, etc.). The objective of this study was to comprehensively determine the proportions and numbers of workers exposed to PPPs over the 2007–2019 period and to break them down according to various criteria (worker status, industry sector, etc.).Method – A job-exposure matrix specific to PPPs (classified into four categories: herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and others) was developed by experts as part of the Matgéné program. This matrix was then cross-referenced with data from the 2007, 2013, and 2019 population censuses. The numbers and proportions of exposed workers, as well as their sensitivity intervals (SI), could thus be estimated. Results – In 2019, 1.7% (sensitivity interval, SI: [1.5–2.0]) of the employed population in mainland France, aged 20 to 74, were exposed to at least one category of PPP, representing 449,260 workers [381,000–514,020]. The proportion of exposed individuals was higher among the self-employed than among employees (9.0% [7.9–10.1] versus 0.7% [0.6–0.9]). The vast majority of exposed individuals worked in agriculture (90%), and to a lesser extent, in the service sector, particularly as gardeners.Discussion – These indicators are the first to document exposure to plant protection products among the entire working population, regardless of sector of activity, and across mainland France. They confirm the high proportion of workers exposed to PPPs in the agricultural sector, but also highlight non-agricultural jobs. These results can be used by occupational health and safety professionals to guide their actions.
