PestiRiv: Study of Pesticide Exposure Among Residents of Wine-Growing and Non-Wine-Growing Areas. Volume 0: Materials, Methods, and Summary of Data Collection

Santé publique France and ANSES are conducting the PestiRiv study, which aims to measure environmental contamination and pesticide exposure among people living in wine-growing areas (near vineyards) due to pesticides used on these crops, and to determine whether the measured levels are higher than those observed among people living in non-wine-growing areas (far from any crops). PestiRiv is the first large-scale study in France to provide objective data to address the many remaining uncertainties regarding the contamination of the environment and the exposure of people living in wine-growing areas to pesticides. The fieldwork for the PestiRiv study took place from October 2021 to September 2022 to cover both the period when vineyard treatments are most frequent and the period when they are least frequent. In total, 1,946 adults and 742 children participated in the study, resulting in the collection of 3,484 urine samples, 1,890 hair samples, 790 dust samples, 333 indoor air samples, 110 samples of garden fruits and vegetables, and 1,596 ambient air samples. Volume 0 of PestiRiv compiles all the details regarding materials and methods related to the study’s implementation (summary of the protocol, methods for measuring environmental exposure and contamination, statistical methods) and presents an overview of the data collection. This volume also analyzes the study’s limitations and sources of uncertainty to characterize their potential impact on meeting the study’s objectives and to determine how to account for them when interpreting the study results. The results of the PestiRiv study are presented in Volume 1 (results regarding environmental contamination) and Volume 2 (results regarding levels of biological contamination). These results are accompanied by a joint opinion issued by Santé publique France and ANSES, which includes the conclusions and recommendations of their expert panels regarding the study’s findings.
