Social CPS Worksheet: Communicating with Empathy (S1.2)
This fact sheet focuses on the first general social psychosocial competency (PSC) and provides an overview of a specific psychosocial competency: Communicating with Empathy (S1.2). Communicating with empathy refers to the ability to perceive and understand another person’s experience (their emotions, perspective, needs, etc.) and to articulate it appropriately. Communicating empathetically requires developing three main psychological skills and competencies: Skill 1: Understanding the characteristics of empathetic communication; Skill 2: Listening empathetically (empathic understanding and silent listening); Skill 3: Speaking empathetically (empathic rephrasing and active listening). This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
