CPS Cognitive Worksheet: Solving Problems Creatively and Effectively (C2.3) & Knowing How to Ask for Help (C2.4)

This fact sheet was written by Nadine Fréry and Béatrice Lamboy based on the Santé publique France CPS Reference Guide, Volume 2. It focuses on the second general cognitive psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of two specific cognitive psychosocial competencies: Solving problems creatively and effectively (C2.3) and Knowing how to ask for help (C2.4). The ability to solve problems creatively requires knowing how to analyze a problematic situation, being able to imagine different possible solutions, allowing alternatives to emerge, knowing how to evaluate the various solutions, and being able to choose a solution that is positive for oneself and for others. This cognitive skill enhances creative thinking and requires mastery of multi-step problem-solving techniques. Solving problems creatively and effectively and knowing how to ask for help involves developing four main psychological skills and competencies: Observing and analyzing a problematic situation; Using problem-solving techniques to independently resolve everyday problems (Strategy 1); Knowing how to ask for help to solve problems that cannot be solved alone (Strategy 2); Knowing how to ask emergency professionals for help in dealing with dangerous situations (Strategy 3). This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
