The Inserm collective expert report (2003), the National Conference on Alcohol (2007), and the reports and plans of the Interministerial Mission to Combat Drugs and Drug Addiction had all highlighted, in various ways, the importance of involving occupational physicians in the field of addiction and the value of collaboration between occupational medicine and primary care. In this context, following several exploratory studies, INPES, the National Institute for Health and Safety (INRS), and the Western Île-de-France Society of Occupational Medicine (SMTOIF)—all of which are strongly committed to supporting these professionals—decided to undertake a study on the opinions and practices of occupational physicians regarding the prevention of addictive behaviors: the role of addictions in relation to occupational health priorities, documentation in medical records, knowledge of and practices regarding brief interventions, opinions on screening tests, and involvement in individual prevention and group-based approaches.[article excerpt]
