Rethinking social participation in old age.
Frédéric Balard invites us to reflect on how the concept of social participation is increasingly being established as a universal goal. Indeed, the development of a model for active and healthy aging today greatly influences the definition of what social participation among older adults should entail. However, if participation means taking part in an activity one feels concerned about, we must avoid the denial inherent in promoting “healthy aging” activities to people who have entered the final stage of their lives.
