Mother-baby shared care units: a tailored solution, a system to be implemented.

Joint mother-infant hospitalization units have recently been established in France. These services involve the hospitalization of both the mother and her child when the mother is experiencing severe depression or another confirmed psychiatric disorder following childbirth. These units have been evaluated, and the results confirm the value of this type of intervention for both the mother’s and the child’s mental health. Nevertheless, such units remain too rare in France. More generally, appropriate care for the mother and child relies on a network of professionals—both in and outside the hospital—working in partnership and across disciplines.
