Through a series of case studies, *La Santé de l'homme* traces the evolution of perceptions of mental health, from the realms of hygienism and morality to that of public health. The authors’ historical, political, and social analysis illustrates how the issue of mental health has come to be integrated into the European and international context, on the one hand, and adapted to local contexts, on the other.
