The INPES Health Barometer, a tool for monitoring and understanding young people's health behaviors.
Youth health has been at the center of public debate for several years. A "Youth Health" plan focused on 16- to 25-year-olds was presented by the Ministry of Health, Youth, and Sports in February 2008, followed by a series of specific measures outlined in the "Hospitals, Patients, Health, and Territories" Act in July 2009. President François Hollande has also made this one of the priorities of his term in office in terms of health and social policy initiatives. This political focus on young people likely stems more from the medicalization of social issues (Fassin, 1998) than from a health situation that does not appear particularly alarming (Sommelet, 2007; Loncle, 2007). Such attention from public authorities effectively creates a constantly evolving need for knowledge, not only regarding health status but also—especially when it comes to young people—regarding health behaviors.[article excerpt]
