Health through comics.
The two authors, who present here a brief summary of their study on health messages in comic books, examine how the heroes of these works behave during their adventures when faced with illness and behavioral issues, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. They also analyze comic books created to present the activities and achievements of humanitarian organizations—particularly in developing countries—to young people in an engaging way. The impact of social and medical realities on the creation of recent comic books is highlighted through the issues of smoking and, above all, AIDS. The potential role of comic books as a medium for health messages is evaluated.
