Exploring Sexuality in Adolescence: The Issue of Consent.

A team of researchers conducted a survey of high school students on sexuality to analyze what the concept of consent means to them. Teenagers may consent blindly, saying yes without knowing where that commitment will lead. Consent is fragile in the sense that it can be coerced, negotiated, or relinquished. In sexual relationships, there is a significant power imbalance regarding consent between the person making the proposal and the person accepting it. The proposal and acceptance can occur without a word, through silence or an explicit gesture. This concept of consent must be central to sex education sessions conducted in schools.
