This article warns prevention professionals about the potential adverse effects of prevention efforts and describes the possible causes of these harmful effects: focusing on the population’s presumed needs rather than their actual expectations; insufficient theoretical foundations underpinning the programs; inadequate training for professionals; and a lack of social coherence and cultural adaptation in the messages.
