Statistics on medical causes of death in France are compiled by the Inserm Center for Epidemiology of Medical Causes of Death (CépiDc) based on death certificates. These statistics cover the entire country. The coding of medical causes of death was carried out according to the rules of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9), until 1999. Statistics on deaths from accidents of daily life (AcVC) are derived from the Supplementary Classification of External Causes of Injury and Poisoning in ICD-9. This classification includes intentional injuries: suicides and homicides; and unintentional injuries: traffic accidents, medical and surgical accidents, accidents of daily life; and injuries and poisonings of undetermined intent. This article presents statistics on the causes of death from accidents of daily life in France in 1999 and their trends over the period from 1982 to 1999.
