Report on Perinatal Health Surveillance in France, 2010–2019
This report compiles key indicators of perinatal epidemiology in France and, for the first time, provides a multi-source analysis of trends in perinatal health for the period 2010–2019 (2014–2019 for Mayotte) from both national and regional perspectives. It provides the knowledge necessary for a comprehensive view and understanding of perinatal health at the national and regional levels, with particular attention paid to the overseas departments. The indicators presented aim to describe the health status and sociodemographic characteristics of mothers, risk factors, prenatal care and practices during childbirth, the child’s health at birth, and breastfeeding. While overall the indicators point to a high and stable level of care in France, a detailed analysis reveals significant regional variation in perinatal health, particularly in the overseas departments (DROM), which generally exhibit less favorable indicators than the mainland. However, the situation is also heterogeneous within these departments. This report highlights significant regional inequalities. It also describes a concerning trend in certain indicators that must be better understood in order to reverse the trend in the coming years. This report serves as a key source of evidence-based knowledge for public policy action, particularly within the framework of the “First 1,000 Days” strategy. The findings from the data analyses call for strengthening prevention and the promotion of perinatal health to support mothers and families throughout pregnancy, as well as improved access to rights and care, particularly in certain regions. The gradient of social inequalities is a key indicator of adverse pregnancy outcomes and must be a priority criterion for strengthening and implementing actions to improve the health of parents and children. This report is intended to be updated regularly to meet the information needs of the perinatal health surveillance system. A selection of indicators published in this report is also available as open data on the Géodes portal of Santé publique France (https://geodes.santepubliquefrance.fr).
