Heat Waves and Health in France. Bulletin of August 19, 2026.

Key Points

  • A new heat wave has been affecting mainland France since July 29. The monitoring data presented in this bulletin covers the period from August 11 to 17. During this period, 91% of the mainland population was affected by at least one day of an orange heat wave alert.
  • The daily number of emergency room visits across all age groups for the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia/heatstroke, dehydration, and hyponatremia) ranged from 230 to 305 (with a peak on August 14) between August 11 and 15. Increases in emergency department visits related to the iCanicule indicator were observed across all age groups. More than half of the visits involved people aged 75 and older. The number of visits appears to have been declining since August 16 (unconsolidated data).
  • The number of daily hospitalizations following an emergency room visit for the iCanicule indicator ranged from 146 to 184 (peaking on August 14) between August 11 and 15. Between 50 and 60 of these involved people aged 15–74, and between 75 and 120 involved people aged 75 and older.
  • The number of daily SOS Médecins consultations across all age groups for the iCanicule indicator ranged from 30 to 91 (with a peak on August 15) between August 11 and 16. Increases in SOS Médecins consultations for the iCanicule indicator were observed across all age groups. Nearly half of the consultations involved people aged 15–74 and older. The number of consultations appears to have been decreasing since August 16 (unconsolidated data).
  • The trends observed in healthcare utilization are consistent with temperature trends. These impacts underscore the importance of implementing prevention and adaptation measures for the entire population, based on weather forecasts, without waiting to observe actual impacts. As a reminder, the effects on morbidity do not allow us to predict mortality.
