Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of July 3, 2019.
Key Points
The heat wave began on June 23 and ended on July 2. It affected 12 regions. Four departments were placed under a red alert for the day and night of June 28, for the first time since 2004.
78% of the metropolitan population experienced at least one day under an orange heat wave alert, including 7% who experienced one day under a red alert
Analysis of emergency care visits indicates a marked increase in the composite health indicator tracked under the national heat wave management plan (iCanicule), with more than 600 daily visits over three consecutive days (June 27–29).
The vast majority of these emergency care visits were related to hyperthermia, which may have resulted from very high maximum temperatures combined with risky behaviors.
