Heat Wave and Health Alert System. National Update as of July 25, 2023.

Key Points

  • Between July 18 and 24, 10 departments in 3 regions (Corsica, Occitanie, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) were placed under an orange heat wave alert for at least one day. Météo France announced the end of all orange heat wave alerts for July 25.

  • In regions under an orange heatwave alert, analysis of emergency care utilization indicates an increase in the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia/heatstroke, dehydration, hyponatremia), linked to rising temperatures. This indicator was already high the previous week in these three regions. The peak in emergency care visits was recorded between July 19 and 20, followed by a decrease in the indicator, though it did not return to the level observed before the heatwave.

  • Heat poses a health risk. The observed health impacts underscore the importance of implementing preventive measures to mitigate the effects of heat.
