Expert Insights: Adapting Urban Environments to Heat Waves: A Necessity for Protecting Public Health?; Event on June 20, 2024.

On June 20, 2024, Santé publique France, in collaboration with the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), the National Center for Local Public Service (CNFPT), the Scientific and Technical Center for Building (CSTB), and the School of Advanced Studies in Public Health (EHESP), organized a workshop dedicated to health issues related to heat exposure in urban planning and building construction/renovation. The objective was to raise awareness that action must be taken regarding our living environments in the context of climate change. This involves anticipating the health implications of these findings, particularly through changes in the professional practices of project managers and clients in the sectors of land use planning, urban planning, and construction, via training or awareness-raising. The working meeting on June 20, 2024, marks a first and important step in this advocacy effort. Session 1 featured five presentations: Heat Waves in a Future Climate: What Should We Prepare For? (Michel Schneider); How Does the Human Body React to Heat? (Jean-François Toussaint); Twenty years of evidence on the health impacts of heat on the population (Karine Laaidi); Vulnerability to heat (Mathilde Pascal); A new system for adapting to extreme heat (Agnès Verrier). It was followed by a roundtable discussion and a presentation by Sébastien Denys on future prospects. In addition to the conference proceedings with links to the recorded presentations, this booklet includes an appendix with documentary resources (reviews of studies, regulatory texts, guides and tools, reports, and forecasts on the subject), as well as lists of the speakers and the event’s organizing committee.
