Tanning beds (artificial UV rays): characteristics, knowledge, opinions, and attitudes of users in mainland France: Cancer Barometer 2010, 2015

The objective of the study presented in this poster was to describe the prevalence of tanning bed use in France and the factors associated with such use, as well as risk factors, attitudes, and awareness of the risks of artificial UV radiation among users (U) and non-users (NU). The national Baromètre Cancer (BC) survey was conducted via telephone interviews with a representative sample of 3,931 French residents aged 15 to 75, from May to October 2015. The data were weighted by age, sex, and education level for bivariate and multivariate analyses to ensure the sample’s national representativeness. The results were compared to those of the BC-2010. In 2015, 14.0% of respondents had used tanning beds at least once in their lifetime (lifetime users, as in 2010) and 1.6% were recent users (within the last twelve months) (compared to 3.4% in 2010, p<0.001). Among those under 18, 4.7% were recent users despite the legal ban on minors. Misconceptions about synthetic drugs remain common among users: 41.8% of lifetime users (compared to 21.0% of non-users, p<0.001) and 69.8% of recent users (compared to 23.2% of non-users, p<0.001) believe that “artificial tanning before vacation protects the skin from sunburn.” The factors positively associated with UVT users were younger age, female gender, higher household income, and higher education level. UVT users reported using less sunscreen, thereby increasing their cumulative UV exposure and raising their risk of skin cancer in particular. Misconceptions must be addressed. The low awareness of risks among adolescents and young adults suggests targeted interventions to reduce or stop the use of tanning beds in order to change perceptions and behaviors regarding tanning. The question of banning tanning beds in France, as suggested by the latest ANSES advisory, must be raised.
