Expert Insights: Reducing the Burden of Alcohol. Symposium on December 3, 2024

An international symposium on reducing alcohol-related harm was co-organized by Santé publique France and EuroHealthNet on December 3, 2024, in Brussels. Two main topics were addressed: how to develop and promote effective recommendations for low-risk alcohol consumption, and how to counter the alcohol industry’s influence on health policies. Conclusion of the symposium: to effectively reduce alcohol-related harm, it is necessary to inform the public, particularly by relying on evidence-based consumption guidelines and health warnings, robust public health campaigns, as well as a set of strong policy measures. International cooperation and the exchange of experiences between different countries are essential. The symposium highlighted the need to continue joint efforts in advocacy, research, and public policy innovation to combat alcohol-related harm and the influence of economic interests.
