This article summarizes self-reported data on alcohol use from the most recent surveys of the general adult and youth populations. It provides a regional breakdown of this use and compares it to data on alcohol-related mortality, as well as household income and alcohol purchases. Finally, it advocates for the inclusion of questions that probe the context of use and enable the identification of problematic drinking rather than merely identifying drinkers in general population surveys.
