Alcohol consumption: Percentage of adults exceeding the guidelines for low-risk consumption, based on data from the 2021 Santé publique France Health Barometer

Introduction – To limit the health impacts of alcohol consumption, guidelines for lower-risk drinking have been developed since 2017 and are regularly promoted through public information campaigns in France. The proportion of adults exceeding these guidelines remained unchanged between 2017 and 2020; the objective of this study is to update this estimate using the most recent data, as well as to provide a regional overview of this indicator. Method – The data used come from the 2021 Santé publique France Barometer, a telephone survey of a random sample of adults residing in metropolitan France and in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). The module analyzed concerns alcohol consumption over the past seven days. Results – Between 2020 and 2021, in metropolitan France, the proportion of adults reporting alcohol consumption above the low-risk consumption guidelines decreased significantly (from 23.7% to 22.0%). This decline is observed primarily among men, younger adults, older adults, and those with the highest incomes. Exceeding the guidelines appears to be significantly higher than the mainland average in Brittany, Pays de la Loire, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, while it is lower in Île-de-France, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and across all DROMs. Furthermore, awareness of the guidelines for lower-risk drinking appears to be improving. Conclusion – This overall decline in the proportion of adults exceeding the guidelines is encouraging and calls for continued efforts in alcohol prevention, while remaining vigilant regarding social health inequalities.
