COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for December 9, 2021

Key Points

In Week 48, the spread of SARS-CoV-2, already very intense in mainland France, continued to increase, with hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care units still rising sharply.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rate higher than during the peaks of the third and fourth waves

    • Incidence rate above 600 per 100,000 among 30- to 39-year-olds and above 900 per 100,000 among 6- to 10-year-olds

    • New hospitalizations and critical care admissions on the rise in nearly all regions

  • Overseas territories:

    • Reunion: Incidence rate and new hospitalizations on the rise

    • Martinique: active circulation of the virus and an increase in hospital admissions

Variants

  • Over 99% of cases identified as the Delta variant through sequencing during the S46 Flash survey (November 15–17)

  • 59 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in France as of December 9 at 4:00 p.m.

  • Moderate circulation of the B.1.640 variant in the region

Contact tracing

  • Decrease in the proportion of investigated cases (in week 47), linked to high incidence

  • Decrease in the proportion of new cases belonging to a known transmission chain

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of December 7, 2021 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • 77.7% of the total population had received at least one dose, and 76.1% were fully vaccinated

    • Among those aged 65 and older, 51.4% had received a booster dose; this rate rose to 76.4% among eligible individuals in this age group

  • Importance of combined measures: vaccination and booster shots, participation in contact tracing, and adherence to all preventive measures, including reducing contact, particularly through telework
