COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for August 4, 2022

Key Points

In Week 30, a marked decline in SARS-CoV-2 circulation continued across the country, with a confirmed drop in hospital admissions. Virological and hospital indicators, however, remained at high levels.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence and positivity rates declining across all age groups and regions

    • Highest incidence rates among those aged 20–39

    • Rate of new hospital admissions declining in nearly all regions

  • Overseas territories:

    • High incidence rates in Guadeloupe (decreasing) and Réunion (stable)

    • Incidence and positivity rates rising in Mayotte

Variants

  • Omicron sublineages: BA.5 predominant (92%) in the Flash S29 survey (July 18)

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of August 1, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • Vaccination coverage for the booster dose remains stable at 75.2% among those aged 18 and older and at 85.1% among those aged 65 and older

    • Second booster dose: 24.1% of those aged 60–79 (32.6% of eligible individuals based on time since the last injection) and 32.7% of those aged 80 and older (43.5% of eligible individuals)

  • Given the summer holidays and activities that may lead to increased virus transmission, adherence to the combined measures remains essential:

    • up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination;

    • isolation if symptoms develop or a COVID-19 test is positive;

    • adherence to preventive measures: wearing a mask in the presence of vulnerable individuals or in crowded indoor spaces (public transportation, large gatherings, etc.) and increased handwashing.

  • In the event of extreme heat, ventilation of enclosed spaces should be limited to the coolest hours of the day.
