Hepatitis A in France. Epidemiological data for 2013.

In 2013, 915 cases of hepatitis A were reported (836 in mainland France, 79 in the overseas departments). In the overseas departments, 53% of cases were reported by Mayotte. For mainland France, the annual incidence rate of reported cases was 1.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Compared to 2012, the number of cases reported in 2013 in mainland France decreased by 20% (836 vs. 1,001). This decrease can be largely explained by the absence of clusters of cases among populations living in temporary camps for travelers under poor sanitary conditions. For the record, major outbreaks occurred in this population every year from 2008 to 2012.

As in previous years, the annual incidence rates in 2013 were generally higher among men (1.4/100,000) than among women (1.2/100,000) and among those under 15 years of age (2.8/100,000) than in other age groups (1.0/100,000).

The two main risk exposures in the 2 to 6 weeks preceding the onset of the disease were a stay outside mainland France (42%) and the presence of hepatitis A cases among close contacts (40%), with 82% of these cases occurring within the family circle. Among cases who had traveled outside mainland France, more than half (53%) had visited a country in the Maghreb.

In 2013, 28% of reported cases were part of a cluster of cases investigated by Regional Health Agencies and Interregional Epidemiology Units.
