Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika - Data from Enhanced Surveillance in Metropolitan France in 2021

From May 1 to November 30 each year, Santé publique France coordinates enhanced seasonal surveillance for chikungunya, dengue, and Zika in mainland France, in collaboration with the relevant Regional Health Agencies (see surveillance system and partners).

Since the monitoring period ended on November 30, this is the final update for the 2021 season.

From May 1, 2021, to December 10, 2021, the following cases were confirmed in mainland France:

  • 164 imported cases of dengue, including 105 from Réunion; 144 cases were diagnosed in departments with documented populations of Aedes albopictus

  • 3 imported cases of chikungunya

  • 0 imported cases of Zika

One locally transmitted case of dengue was identified in the Var department on July 26, 2021. No other cases have been identified to date, including during the door-to-door surveys conducted on August 2 and 9.

Another locally acquired case of dengue was identified in Montpellier on November 5, 2021. Vector control measures were carried out around the patient’s home on November 11 and 15. No other cases have been identified, including during door-to-door surveys conducted on November 22 and 23, 2021.
