Vaccination in France. Overview of vaccination coverage in 2023.
Key Points
Among infants, significant increases in vaccination coverage have been observed for newly recommended vaccines:
Vaccination coverage with at least one dose against meningococcal B at 8 months is estimated at 74.7% for infants born in 2023, a notable increase of 25.9 percentage points compared to infants born in 2022 (48.8%). Vaccination coverage with 3 doses of meningococcal B vaccine by 21 months is estimated at 35.1%.
Vaccination coverage with at least one dose at 8 months against rotavirus is estimated at 30.9% for infants born in 2023, the first cohort of infants for whom vaccination is recommended.
Vaccination coverage rates for mandatory infant vaccinations are generally high. It should be noted, however, that vaccination coverage rates for measles remain insufficient relative to the 95% vaccination coverage target.
Among adolescents, although significant increases in vaccination coverage for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination have been observed, this coverage still needs to be improved among young girls and especially among young boys:
Vaccination coverage for a single dose among 15-year-old girls is estimated at 54.6% in 2023 and 47.8% in 2022, representing an increase of 6.8 percentage points. Two-dose vaccination coverage (full series) among 16-year-old girls is estimated at 44.7% in 2023 and 41.5% in 2022, representing an increase of 3.2 percentage points;
Vaccination coverage with one dose among 15-year-old boys is estimated at 25.9% in 2023 and 12.8% in 2022, representing an increase of 13.1 percentage points. Two-dose vaccination coverage (full schedule) among 16-year-old boys was 15.8% in 2023 and 8.5% in 2022, representing an increase of 7.3 percentage points.
For 12-year-old adolescents who were able to benefit from the vaccination campaign in middle school during 7th grade, a 17-point increase in vaccination coverage was observed among girls and a 15-point increase among boys between the start and end of the campaign. These increases are part of an upward trend in HPV vaccination coverage. In the year preceding the campaign, over an equivalent period, increases in HPV vaccination coverage were estimated at 4 percentage points among girls and boys of the same age. More comprehensive analyses, based in particular on a study conducted among parents in middle schools, will make it possible to estimate the actual gain in HPV vaccination coverage achieved through the campaign.
For adolescents, vaccination coverage against meningococcal C is increasing. It is estimated at 48.0% in 2023 and 43.8% in 2022, representing an increase of 4.2 percentage points.
Among adults, vaccination coverage against influenza and COVID-19 remains insufficient among at-risk individuals. Influenza vaccination coverage has been declining in recent seasons: it is estimated at 54.0% among those aged 65 and older during the 2023–2024 season, a decrease of 2.2 percentage points compared to the previous season, and at 25.4% among those under 65 at risk of severe influenza, a decrease of 6.2 percentage points compared to the previous season. COVID-19 vaccination coverage is estimated at 30.2% among those aged 65 and older.
In terms of vaccination uptake, data from the 2023 edition of the Santé publique France Barometer show stabilization at a high level (83.7%), with an upward trend in the proportion of people strongly in favor of vaccination compared to 2022. Vaccine acceptance, however, remains lower among those with the lowest levels of education or income, and is trending downward among older adults compared to previous years.
