The Benefits and Limitations of New Tools for Assessing Vaccination Coverage in France.

Introduction. In addition to traditional data sources that have been used for many years (notably childhood health certificates and school-based surveys), there are new sources that may be useful for assessing vaccination coverage (VC) and monitoring trends in VC. We analyzed the relevance of these new assessment tools. Method. We identified the main new sources that can be used in assessing UC. The advantages and disadvantages of each were described. Each data source was classified as being of interest or not for routine UC assessment. Results. Vaccine sales data allow for monitoring trends in vaccination activity but do not allow for the calculation of vaccination coverage. Vaccine reimbursement data from the National Inter-Regime Health Insurance Information System (Sniir-AM) fall into three categories. First, aggregated reimbursement data, which are similar to sales data and share their main limitations. Second, data from the General Practitioner Beneficiary Sample (EGB), which allow for the estimation of CV in children shortly after a change in vaccination recommendations. Finally, data from the comprehensive DCIR healthcare reimbursement database (inter-regime consumption datamart), currently under exploration, which should enable analyses at fine geographic scales. Conclusion. EGB data enable the rapid estimation of national vaccination coverage among children, regardless of age and for any vaccine on the immunization schedule, provided that the vaccine is reimbursed. Subnational estimates can be derived from the DCIR database. None of these new tools allows for the assessment of vaccination coverage among adults. (R.A.)
