In France, tuberculosis has been a reportable disease since 1964. National surveillance makes it possible to track trends in the disease and changes in at-risk groups. At the departmental level, it enables the adaptation of tuberculosis control measures. The National Reference Centers (CNR) for tuberculosis are also a source of information on the epidemiology of tuberculosis in France. Since 1997, the average incidence of tuberculosis calculated from mandatory reporting data appears low but has been stagnant for the past four years, and regional realities vary widely. The epidemiological situation of tuberculosis is particularly concerning in the Île-de-France region, where the incidence is more than double the national rate. Among people from countries where tuberculosis is endemic, there was an average annual increase in incidence of 6% between 1997 and 2000, whereas the rate decreased by 5% among French nationals.
