Tuberculosis remains a significant public health issue; according to WHO estimates, nearly 8 million people contract tuberculosis each year, and 2 million die from the disease. More than 95% of those affected live in developing countries. In industrialized countries, a halt in the steady decline of the disease’s incidence in the early 1990s was observed, reflecting difficulties in organizing the fight against tuberculosis and exacerbated by the HIV epidemic. In France, the incidence rate of tuberculosis began to decline again in 1995, but the number of reported cases remains the highest among all notifiable diseases. Because the social movement by medical inspectors in 1999 and 2000 caused a significant delay in the analysis of notifiable diseases, the data for 1998 and 1999 are presented here. (R.A.)
