Prevalence of Smoking and Vaping in Metropolitan France in 2022 Among People Aged 18–75

Introduction – After an unprecedented decline in smoking prevalence in France between 2014 and 2019, the rate has since stabilized. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the main objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence of smoking in 2022 and to describe its recent trends. Methods – The data used come from a telephone survey of a random sample, conducted between March and July 2022, comprising a total of 3,229 individuals aged 18–75 residing in metropolitan France. Results – In 2022, in metropolitan France, more than three out of ten people aged 18–75 reported smoking (31.8%), and one-quarter reported smoking daily (24.5%). These prevalence rates are stable compared to 2020 and 2019. The prevalence of daily smoking remains higher among men (27.4% versus 21.7% among women). A 14-point gap is observed between people with no formal education or a diploma below the Baccalauréat (30.8%) and those with a diploma above the Baccalauréat (16.8%). Conclusion – The stability in smoking prevalence observed since the COVID-19 crisis continues into 2022. Social inequalities regarding smoking remain very pronounced, and reducing them will be a major challenge for the upcoming third tobacco control plan.
