Smoking behaviors among late adolescents. The 2017 Escapad Survey
Introduction: The latest round of the Escapad survey (Survey on Health and Substance Use During the Defense Readiness Call), which has been conducted since 2000, took place in 2017. The results provide a detailed snapshot of tobacco use among late adolescents. Methods: The ninth round of the Escapad survey, conducted by the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT) during Defense and Citizenship Day, took place in March 2017 among 39,115 17-year-old adolescents in metropolitan France. Results: In 2017, 6 out of 10 17-year-olds (59.0%) reported having smoked at least one cigarette in their lifetime. This rate is significantly lower than in 2014 and well below the rate recorded in the early 2000s (77.6%). Similarly, daily smoking has declined significantly, with 1 in 4 adolescents (25.1%) affected. Shisha use follows the same trend, with 1 in 2 young people (49.9%) having tried it by 2017. Despite this decline in consumption, a significant proportion of 17-year-olds report still being exposed to secondhand smoke: 24.0% at home and 62.9% outside their school. Furthermore, despite the ban on sales to minors, adolescents have no difficulty purchasing cigarettes at a tobacco shop, with 94.5% of daily smokers doing so regularly. The vast majority of those who have purchased cigarettes also report never having had to prove their age (68.4%). Conclusion: The results of Escapad 2017 confirm the trend observed since 2014 of a decline in tobacco use among adolescents. However, adolescents remain frequently exposed to secondhand smoke, and tobacco products remain far too accessible to them under current law.
