Smoking abstinence at six months among callers to the Tabac Info Service hotline (39 89)
Introduction – The Tabac Info Service (TIS, 39 89) telephone helpline, operated by Santé publique France, was established in 1998. An initial evaluation of its impact on smoking cessation was conducted during the 2012–2014 period. The objective of this article is to update this evaluation for the 2018–2020 period. Methods – Since 2012, all callers to 39 89 who spoke with a tobacco specialist have been contacted again six months after their initial call. Their smoking abstinence rates were measured, along with factors associated with quitting. Results – Between 2018 and 2020, 45,803 smokers were in contact with a tobacco specialist from the 39 89 helpline. Among those who agreed to be called back six months later (86.5%), more than one in five (22.2%) reported having been smoke-free for at least 7 days at the time of the follow-up call (those who could not be reached or who refused to answer questions were considered smokers). The abstinence rate was 32.2% among smokers who were already trying to quit smoking at the time of their first call and 17.0% among the other smokers. These rates were stable compared to the 2012–2014 period. The probability of being a non-smoker at six months was lower among women, the most dependent smokers, those with another addiction or a health problem, and the unemployed. Conversely, it was higher among those who reported already attempting to quit at the time of their first call or who had set a quit date, vapers, and those who had received a greater number of follow-up sessions. Conclusion – These results suggest that the TIS telephone program is an effective aid for some smokers, consistent with numerous international studies. This virtually free service should continue to be promoted among the most disadvantaged, with the aim of reducing social inequalities related to smoking.
