SOS Médecins National Newsletter, July 17, 2017
Summary
In week 28 of 2017 (July 10–16), overall activity at SOS Médecins clinics increased among children under 2 years of age (+15%) and among adults aged 15 and older (+11.3%).
Most seasonal summer conditions are on the rise among adults. Notable increases include consultations for asthma (+30%), allergies and insect bites, particularly among those aged 75 and older (64% and 47%, respectively—small sample sizes), as well as meningitis among adults aged 15 to 74 (+12 cases, representing a 71% increase), with this condition accounting for a slightly higher share of overall adult activity compared to previous years.Among children, notable increases were seen in visits for infectious conjunctivitis (+10%) as well as for asthma and allergies, but only among children under 2 years of age (+24% and +12%, respectively). However, these remain within the usual proportions relative to overall activity. Finally, across all age groups, there was an increase in visits for burns (+11%) and a decrease in conditions directly related to heat (-48%).
Among the most common conditions, we note a sharp increase in consultations for chickenpox (+93%) among children, as well as a smaller increase in visits for gastroenteritis, bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract conditions among children under 2 years of age (+23%, +25%, and +18%, respectively). Among adults, nearly all of the most common conditions are on the rise. Of particular note are the increases in urinary tract infections (+33%), bronchitis (+11%), and upper respiratory tract conditions (+19%).
